Hey guys, just want your opinion on this. My Friend is selling his BONE STOCK 1994 toyota supra Targa. It is the non turbo 5 spd manual. The car has 68,xxx miles on it. It is in beautiful condition. The exterior is near perfect and the interior is in great condition with minimal wear on the leather seats. He is asking a firm $18,800. I dont have any pics to post of it and he hasn't thrown it on the internet yet. Do you think I should get this? is it a good deal? It would be a daily driver for me. I am just not sure if the asking price is too high.
UPDATE: After some solid arguments against it right out the gate I will probably let him post it for his asking price and see where it goes. Since my DD works so well now, I can always put the money towards a project car...im thinking Datsun

I would pass it up just because you want to DD it. While it is reliable, it's just not the best DD.

why is that?

$18,800 is a decent price for an unmolested Mk4 Supra.

20 year old sports car that's rare enough to dd? I would buy something else for dd duty. Something does not settle well with me on that perspective. My humble opinion.

I get the aprehension about driving a car like that daily. But honestly it makes me sick when cars like this sit in a shed and are brought out once a blue moon to stretch their legs. The car would have a heated garage and a loving owner. Every car I have ever owned has been babied :)

It's a fuel hog, cop magnet, and I would be scared to leave it in a car park.

Those are all very fair points actually. The car park isnt a fear. I have a heated garage. I live in a city so anywhere I go is by bicycle, the only time I drive is to work where it is parked in a gated, locked and security monitored lot.

I personally wouldn't pay that much for an NA. I know some people get that much for them, but the NA cars aren't collectible and aren't that fun to DD. The only reason I would buy something like that would be to do a swap on, just like an NA 300ZX.
MKIVs make poor DDs and they don't take miles well. I wouldn't plan on DDing it unless you plan to gut it and build it up later on.

You have made the most solid argument yet
Thanks for your input. I dont know much about these cars besides the fact that they look like sex. Its such a tempting car to have offered I needed to get some opinions before I just yelled "TAKE MY MONEY NOW" and since I dont have alot of car friends I turn to oppo-strangers :)

Hmmm, MK. IV. I think that might just be the price you have to pay. For a friend I might just ask to pay an even $18k but if it's what you want, I wouldn't blame you at all.

If it's something you really like, you will just have to decide what it's worth to you. Consider the cost of buying it, cost of maintenance (it's at a mileage it should have a decent amount done), and cost to feed it. If you like it still, DD it and be happy. When it breaks, replace the parts with better ones.
If not, just buy a better car for the money.

Initially I thought 18,800 was wayyyy too high, but kbb says it books out in excellent condition in the 17's. So your friend is not far off and while it sounds like a very nice example for a 94... it's still 17k for a 20 year old car. Wear doesn't come from driving only, time wears things out on it's own as well.

I know, that was the experience I had with my 2002 SVT Focus. When I bought it this year with 38,000 miles I got it home and the AC compressor blew out and the CAT stopped working. It was a holiday car at most with one owner. I got it for a steal but had to put most of the money i saved into fixing it. That is one of my concerns with this car. While its in such good shape I know how little my buddy drove it and im sure stuff needs replacement.

I think if you need a DD performance car with that kind of a budget then you have a many more reasonable and dependable options. Think about EVERYTHING else you can get for the money before you even start looking at a single model.
If your heart is set on buying a Supra then disregard everything I said.

You are way too right. I mean I love the S2000 which is well under that price, as well as BMW 128i which can be found under that mark. Also, if I save the money on my dd I can get the Datsun 510 or 610 project car i have been looking for

When you run into some obscure part that is specific to that model breaking its going to be hard to repair. Just saying. Also old cars being dd makes for turning a clean example into a heap in short order, loving owner or not. Every seal, every piece of rubber, every wire in that car is going to degrade at an accelerated rate within 6 months of owning. My idea of a dd is either a simple old machine that you can fix with a hammer, or a much newer one that does not show signs of rubber rot yet.

I think you answered your question! I didn't want to bring it up, but if I had a budget like that, I would split it 60/40 on a fun to drive DD and a project. Like you, the project would ideally be a Datsun 510, maybe a 240z. But then I'd also like to have a Volvo p1800, VW Beetle, BMW 2002, Toyota AE86 Corolla GTS or first-gen MR2....
Yup, cut your DD budget and get a project.

There is a RHD AE86 Levin APEX for sale close to me. He wanted 11k firm now he is down to 10k firm... i imagine he will drop lower... then i will pounce on it.

Give it two months and offer him $9k, saying that you really wanted a Trueno but you can settle for a Levin.

If it is clean and not trashed out by a drifter that thinks his raceland coils add value I would take the Levin. But that is only for a prime pristine well maintained low mile 86. It is crazy how much the 86's have skyrocketed in price from 2003 when I first wanted one, to now. I can't find any good ones that are reasonably priced and the ones that are out there to find are all beat up and priced about $3,000 too high. . .
I dunno, I like the Leven face more than the Trueno. I know, I know, that's sacrilege to the gods of the pop up lamps. . .

I prefer the levin in almost all ways. The one that this guy had he imported last october... it was bone stock

I totally forgot that the 86's are totally importable now. Haha, well for a straight from Japan RHD Levin that might be a good buy, as long as the motor and tranny are in tip top shape. Get the Leven and spend the surplus of the Supra budget on ITB's for the 4-AGE. . . because DAT SOUND!

If you love Supras and intend to keep it for years, then it's worth it. But if you aren't a Supra fanatic, why?
